Harriet Johnston was born on November 10, 1907, to William Milton Johnston and Mabel Sleeper Johnston in Billings, Montana. She had two siblings, Margaret and Paul. She attended the University of Montana-Missoula where she belonged to Kappa Alpha Theta, majored in physical education and biology, and graduated in 1929.
